Rental FAQs


Will textbooks be available to rent in the bookstore and on our web site?

  • Yes, textbooks are available to rent in store and online.

  • What are my options for renting books from the UC San Diego Bookstore?

  • Come into the store and one of the knowledgeable staff in our Textbook department will be eager to help you. After finding an eligible book, proceed to any of our cashiers and let them know which books you want to rent.
  • Select your courses on our web site. If your book can be rented, a rental option will be listed as a choice.

  • Why are some books not rentable at the UC San Diego Bookstore?

  • The few books that are not rentable at the UC San Diego Bookstore may be custom editions, include one-time use software, and have other similar characteristics. We strive to make as many titles rentable as possible.

  • If I change my mind during the quarter and decide I want to keep my rented textbook, can I buy it?

  • Yes. Just come into the store so we can make the necessary adjustments so you will pay the same as if you simply bought the book in the first place.

  • NOTE:

  • Online textbook rentals require your credit card information as collateral in case you do not return your rental book(s) or your rental book(s) is returned damaged, as per the rental agreement. There will be a separate payment page where you will be able to choose your method of payment: Credit Card, UC San Diego Student Account, or Campus Recharge/Index Number.

  • Can I get a refund on a rented book if I decide I don't want it or if I drop the class?

  • The UC San Diego Bookstore’s standard refund policies apply. New and used books must be returned in the same condition in which they were rented. Any access codes or other sealed materials must be unused and unopened.
  • Fall, Winter, and Spring Quarters: For all classes beginning first week returns or exchanges may be made through Saturday of the first week; thereafter, all sales are final.
  • Extension & ELI Classes: For classes beginning after the first week of the Quarter returns or exchanges may be made up to one week from the first class meeting; thereafter, all sales are final.
  • Summer Session: Returns or exchanges may be made up to 3 days after the first class meeting; thereafter, all sales are final.
  • Exceptions will be made for dropped or cancelled classes if requested by the last day to drop a class without a “W”. A Term Audit showing the dropped class or proof that the class was cancelled must accompany your request.

  • What is the rental agreement?

    By renting materials from the UC San Diego Bookstore YOU agree:

    1. To check in rented materials to the UC San Diego Bookstore in a sellable condition by the due date.
    2. If RENTED Materials are not checked in by the return date OR are checked back damaged (in unsellable condition), you will be charged the replacement price of the book (as printed on your receipt at the time of rental), plus an additional $5.00 administrative fee per rental item.
    3. Sellable condition means all book spines & covers are intact, there is no damage to the materials, all component parts (i.e. CDs, supplemental, etc.) of the Rented Materials are present. However, a reasonable amount of highlighting and writing in the rented book is acceptable
    4. You are responsible to remember the Rental Return Date.
    5. You are financially responsible for any loss or theft of Rented Materials.
    6. There are no discounts on Rented Materials.
